I have given much thought as to whether or not I wanted to write an article about what is called "Thanksgiving". It isn't a day that can be given any honor by me, being of Mohegan descent. It is a history that goes back to 1620. I could elaborate, but I truly believe that each person should read the history of the first Thanksgiving, and followup on other sites. It is quite difficult for me to write any words that would or could be written through the tears that are flowing from my eyes, and other Native Americans right now.
Therefore, the elaborate table is set for the traditional Thanksgiving meal that most people in this country believe to be shared by one and all. The family members have all arrived for all the goodies, trimmings, laughter and full bellies. The text books leave out what is truth. There isn't any evidence that turkey was the mainstay of the first Thanksgiving. It was written that five deer were brought to the feast, along with lobster, seal and swans. The Wampanoag spices and cooking methods were used.
If you will take note of the picture that I have at the top, the beautiful set table, but not a person sitting at the table. You may ask why. If you read about this day, you will know the answer.
Yes, the turkey. That is "Wahoo's" turkey that he will take to his homeless and forgotten friends that are living around the garbage dumpsters.
