Hackers in control of the botnet can use the combined power of the computers to attack other websites, or hide behind them to conceal their identities

DR, thanks for the heads up. We really don't need more of this, but I guess we will have to learn to live with it.

Has anybody heard whether or not our Anti-Virus programs like Norton has said anything about this?

Ditto

Both mcafee and norton have updated .dat files available through their updates that recognize highlander. Those are just the ones I looked into, there are surely many more. Personally, I would remind everyone that an anti virus is not a replacement for common sense. Accept no executable attachments in your email.Do not download or run executables from unverifiable sources. If you are prompted to install software in order to visit a website, find another website. In all my years working in IT, I have been infected a grand total of once.

One other thing, if you allow others to use your computer, make sure they are using an account that has no admin priviliges so that they are unable to install software withiut your explicit permission.

Ditto, thanks much for the advice. It is most appreciated, for sure. I run the full Norton Suite here everyday and update the program at the same time so I hope that I am protected. You IT guys are great and I didn't spend too much time learning the intricacies of these monsters as I am wont to call them because, in truth, the IT Dept. reported to me so I never thought I had to be too bright and am not which is very evident now in my retirement. Thanks again.

All the popular anti virus programs see it and deal with including the free ones.

Remember this is a PHISHING attempt. it requires that you open an email, then open the attachment for the virus payload to get on your computer.

Hint: The smart folks have email filters set to exclusive and never see these to begin with.
