Horses could soon be butchered in the U.S. for human consumption after Congress quietly lifted a 5-year-old ban on funding horse meat inspections, and activists say slaughterhouses could be up and running in as little as a month

Congress lifted the ban in a spending bill President Barack Obama signed into law Nov. 18 to keep the government afloat until mid-December.

It did not, however, allocate any new money to pay for horse meat inspections, which opponents claim could cost taxpayers $3 million to $5 million a year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture would have to find the money in its existing budget, which is expected to see more cuts this year as Congress and the White House aim to trim federal spending.

This is not the first time horse meat has been offered for sale. As a kid in the mid 70's I remember being disgusted finding it in butcher cases when I went shopping with my mother.

But then there are those who find ANYTHING is a butcher shop disgusting.

I have had horse. It is not bad - done correctly.

There are those who find frog legs/snails/lobster and crab (insects of the sea)/ snake/raccoon/rabbit/locust/(list too long to type) disgusting. We, as humans have eaten horse for millions of years. It was the staple for the armies of the US (and many other countries) for a number of years. There is NO reason to exclude such a nutritious source of protein from the food supply. No, don't start with cats and dogs - they are a staple in many cultures.

No, don't start with humans as a food source, I may like my friend, but not for lunch. And I don't want to get into a discussion about the Donner (et aux) survival fiasco(s).

This is something that needs to come back. Horsemeat was sold overseas and the price of a horse was incredible back then i do believe at 1 time it was up to 1.40 plus a pound. Now before i get bashed by the animal lovers which i am also. The horse economy went down the tubes a year or so after they took the slaughterhouses away. If you people,(those who dont know or just dont have anything else to do) can come up with a way to dispose of unwanted horses please do tell otherwise we can always haul them over to your back yard and you can feed them! A side note do you know how many horses have been turned loose left in stalls at shows or just abandoned because there is no market anymore?>??????? The only thing that was good about the whole thing was a bunch of people that should not of been breeding horses in the first place finally quit.

I ate horse meat in '60s & 70's also and saw no difference than beef. I guess horses are more cute and smarter than a cow so some people form attachments.

From a farming heritage, animals were not pets, cats worked for their food as did dogs. They were not family.. Now pigs are fashionable,Saay What? They put food on the table and cash from breeding.

If a cat was a good mouser or a dog good at keeping vermin away you might make them a good den for shelter out back of the barn as reward.

Arkansas Gloria, #7.1;

Lets see, They eat testicles, monkey brain, eye balls, bird spit (birds nest soup), sharks tail, and a delicacy "thousand year egg" fermented aged eggs.

Horse meat? Cheaper than beef, Looks the same, taste same, sells for more profit as beef. Also, the only current market.

I dont have a problem with horse meat being served in the US. Its the same as any other kind of food where if you dont like it, you dont have to eat it. In some parts of the world, goat and sheep are staples. In the US, aside from lamb, not so much. We eat a lot of beef, but in India, cows are sacred. Horses are a viable source of protein. It only makes sense that if there are hungry people, and a food source is available, that food source should be used.

As far as horses being smarter than cows, Ive raised both. Neither one has much to brag about in the brains department, although I would have to say that horses are cuter. :)

Other than "human", IMO, NO-ONE has the right to tell me what I may feed my family to survive. I hate the taste of yams, should I have the right to have a law passed saying one can not eat yams? I have 6 pet sheep - should it be illegal for ANYONE to eat ANY sheep? What of by (hypothetical) pet halibut/tuna/chicken (I actually have 8)????
